Car Photography 101: The Right Lens for You
Drive Along Photography

Oftentimes photography can be really tricky especially for those who are just getting into car photography. But here are some quick tips in finding the right lens for that nice photo. You may find these either online or in your nearest camera store if you're a DSLR camera user.

  • 35mm f/1.4 lens. If your car is in a still or idle position, the best type of lens is the 35mm lens. This gives you a chance to get to shoot your car at a wide angle point of view without having to make a huge effort to stand far from the subject car. Since it's considered as the prime lens, you can shoot at wide apertures to give that nice blur or haze background.
  • 24-70mm f/2.8. Now if you're aiming for a good moving car shot, the 24-70mm lens is for you. It is a good all-around lens for car photography which can shoot both close and wide shot using a single lens. Because it's a zoom lens, adjustments can be made quickly. It's ideal for moving car shots (that are not too far away).
  • 70-200mm f/2.8. For the race car enthusiast or taking that car shot from afar, you might want to consider purchasing the 70-200mm lens. It lets you take the shot from a very safe distance without compromising the photo. You need a fast shutter speed for this.

Over all, safest to say when it comes to a beginner's shot at taking nice car photos, you may use any standard lens that will give you everything you need from a close-up shot, to a nice wide angle shot. And when choosing the right kind of lens you have to consider two things: the focal length and aperture which plays a huge role in controlling the depth of field and low-light performance

If you're a DSLR camera owner or plan on buying one you may consider the following brands:

  • NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
  • Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens
  • Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM (Prime Lens)
  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens
  • Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II Lens
  • Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens (Prime Lens)
  • Fujifilm Fujinon XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens
  • Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Lens
  • Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens (Prime Lens)
  • Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4-5.6 II POWER O.I.S. Lens
  • Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

Now if you can't afford a DSLR or its lenses (which can be expensive as well since most lenses are sold separately from the actually camera), you can also change the settings on your mobile phone if you have one. On the more recent Samsung models, they have the PRO settings on the MORE options of the camera. Now on an iPhone, you can easily find it on the Camera Settings.

Taking a photo of that dream car you want is not that hard once you get a hang of it, what's important is you enjoy taking the photo and having a blast while doing so. Happy clicking!
